If you’re a mining company, you may need to protect your original works of authorship. If so, it’s important to understand how to register a copyright with the U.S. Copyright Office and what that means for your business.
To complete an application for copyright registration, you must fill out the appropriate form. The forms are available on the US Copyright Office website. You will need to print out and complete the application, including all required information. This includes names and addresses of copyright claimant(s), title of work, date when work was created, and more. You must also sign and date your completed application.
The current fee for registering a copyright is $35 per registration or $65 for three registrations at once (i.e. if you’re applying on behalf of more than one entity).
To register a copyright for your mining company, you must first pay the $65 filing fee. The filing fee is payable to the U.S. Copyright Office and is made via credit card payment or check, both of which can be processed online. Checks should be made payable to “The United States Treasurer” and mailed (not faxed) to:

The U.S. Copyright Office requires that all work be submitted in non-returnable, hard copy or digital form. This means that you cannot simply email the office a digital copy of your work and expect it to be accepted; you must physically mail a DVD or CD with the files on it. You can find out more about how to submit your materials by reading the U.S. Copyright Office’s submission guidelines.
Make Sure You Include the Correct Information and Fees If you are submitting a non-returnable copy of your work, it is critical that you include all the necessary information and fees. The U.S. Copyright Office states that each application must have:
Send the completed registration, along with the $65 filing fee to the U.S. Copyright Office. The copyright office accepts payment by check or money order made payable to the United States Treasurer, or you may pay by credit card using their electronic application system.
Copyright is a form of intellectual property that gives the owner the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute copies of the work. Copyright protects original works of authorship including areas such as literature, art, music, architecture and computer software. Copyright protects the expression of ideas not the ideas themselves.
Copyright only applies to original works. If you write a book or song it is automatically protected by copyright law as soon as you create it in tangible form (either on paper or recorded digitally). However in order for your work to be protected by copyright law it must be registered with US Copyright Office before any infringement can occur. It could result in civil penalties for up to $150k per willful infringement plus attorney’s fees plus statutory damages ranging from $750-$30k per infringement depending upon whether actual notice was given before lawsuit was filed against infringer (for example: published material).
If you’re a writer, artist or other creator who wants to protect your original work from being copied by others, it’s important that you register your copyright. The US Copyright Office is the only organization that can grant this protection and they’ll do so by issuing a certificate of registration if the submitted materials meet their standards.
