How to Register a Copyright for Telecommunications

Introduction

The telecommunications industry is an important part of the modern world. It allows us to communicate with each other using cell phones and computers. Because these devices are so important, it’s even more important that you register your copyright if you are a creator in this field. Here’s how:

1. Go to the Electronic Copyright Office Registration System

To register your copyright for telecommunications, you’ll need to go on the website at copyright.gov. Once you’re there, click on the link for “Register a New Claim” and fill out all of the information that’s requested:

  • name, address, email address and phone number.
  • title or description of your work (this can be an intellectual property attorney’s name if you have one).
  • type of work being registered; date it was published or performed (if applicable).
  • whether any other claims have previously been registered in connection with this one.

You must also confirm that no other claims have been made by clicking “yes” or “no” depending on whether this is true or false. If there are previous claims that need to be cleared up first before submitting yours, then you should definitely select yes. Finally hit submit when everything else has been completed properly so we can move onto step two.

2. Select Register a New Claim

To register a new claim, you will need to select Register a New Claim. This option will take you to the registration screen where you can fill out the registration form and pay your fee of $35. You will need to provide:

  • Your name, address and email address
  • The title of your work or an explanation of what the work is supposed to do (for example: “An online application for browsing shopping websites”)

When completing this form, keep in mind that you must use an official title for your work and not something made up by yourself.

3. Agree to the Terms and Conditions

Once you have selected the work and category, you will be taken to the next screen where you will see a list of terms and conditions. Read these carefully before agreeing to them by clicking “I Agree”. You can always review these at any time by going to My Account > My Submissions > Registering Your Work Online.

If you do not agree with any of these terms or conditions, click on “No” and your registration won’t take place.

4. Select the Right Category

Decide what category your work falls under and proceed.

5. Review Your Application Before Paying

Once you have made all of your selections, review them carefully and make any changes if necessary. When you are satisfied with the information provided, click on “Register Work Now” to complete the process.

6. Type in your Name Under Copyright Claimant

Type in your name under Copyright Claimant. Leave the rest of that section blank, then select Next.

You should also be able to include your address and phone number if you want to, but these are totally optional. If you don’t know what to put there and don’t need it for copyright registration purposes, just leave this information blank and move on to the next section.

7. Provide Necessary Details

Fill out the Application Information section with as many details about yourself as you can supply, and then select Next. These details may be included in your public TLS record or other public records without any personal information being removed, so use caution when entering them into this form.

As you fill out this section, keep the following items in mind:

  • You must enter your name exactly as it appears on the certificate of authenticity – including all punctuation marks and symbols – or else your application will not be accepted. Your legal name should be entered here. This is the name that you received at birth, or your nickname if you prefer. If you have changed your name legally, then enter that name here.
  • The address where you will receive your certificate must be a residential address in the United States. You cannot use a P.O. box or any other non-residential address as an application delivery address.
  • You must provide a valid email address and phone number, as well. We will use these to contact you with any questions or concerns that we have about your application. If you do not receive an email confirmation within 24 hours of submitting your application, then please check your spam filters.
  • The next step is to pay for the certificate.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You’ve successfully registered a copyright for your telecommunications. Now that you know how to do this, you can go on to other types of works and continue growing your knowledge of copyright law.
